Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and the Bookish. This weeks theme is top ten trends you'd like to see more/less of.

More of:

1.Fairytale Re-tellings: I love fairytales because you almost always get a happily ever after and modernised or just retold a different way fairytales are even better(much longer) not to mention the fact that they always have super pretty covers like Entwined or Sisters Red.

2.Road Trips: There have been a lot of new books recently centred on road trips and I absolutley adore them. Your main characters stuck together in a confined space for a long period of time whats not to love?? Examples: Amy and Rogers Epic Detour, Don't Stop Now, Two Way Street, Paper Towns has a small but none the less brilliant Road Trip, basically any books with Road Trips are amazing!

3.Issue Books: While I adore and mostly read only fantasy books I have come to notice that the majority of my favourite books are Issue books I guess they leave a lasting impression they say reading a book can change a person and I think It's this kind of book that does that, It changes the way you think and the way you see the world. A few of my favourites: The Perks of being a wallflower, Looking For Alaska, Living Dead Girl, Thirteen Reasons Why, Speak. These kind of books open our eyes and teach us Important things and I would like to see a lot more of them.

Less of:

1.Love Triangles: I don't completely hate them I just think there are an overload of books with love triangles recently but some of my favourite books contain Love Triangles like The Summer Series or Unearthly.

2.Series that never end: I don't mind trilogies or in some cases there is a reason to have a lot of books like Harry Potter where there are seven school years(plus those books are so good they could've gone on forever and I'd still read them) But at  some point some series just get so stretched out to the point where I can't even be bothered to read them any more and then I don't know how things end and I hate that too. It's a vicious circle! A couple I gave up on are: House of Night(got to book 6) Sookie Stackhouse (book 8 I got them in a box set and couldn't be bothered to read the rest) The Vampire Diaries(I read the first four but I still watch the show and adore it!!)

3.Ebooks: Or even just reading of something other than a book I got a hundred classic books on my ds and I just simply can't read it plus one of the best things about a book is the cover(I'll admit I totally judge books by their covers) with ebooks you miss out on that. I see the logic and how useful it is to be able to carry tons of books around with you and get them really fast but I personally just can't do it.

Waiting on Wednesday

I have just heard about two new books that are coming out soon which I am super excited for.The first of these is The Last echo by Kimberly Derting. This will be the third book in the awesome body finder series(if you haven't read it yet you should totally check it out). I can't wait to find out what happens next with Violet and Jay. It is set to be released on April 17th 2012. The cover art has also been released.

The cover is pretty but I don't like it as much as the previous two and I'm not really sure why but I guess I can't really judge it properly until I see it.

The next book I am even more excited about, I am a huge fan of John Green he is one of my favourite authors, if not my favourite. His new book which will be released on May 1st 2012 is called The Fault in Our Stars and to make it even more exciting he is signing every pre-ordered copy, unfortunately I don't think that applies to the UK or anywhere outside of the US. I haven't heard much about the plot except that it is John Greens first novel with a female POV and it's about a 16 year old girl called Hazel who suffers from lung cancer and involves a romance with a boy named Augustus whom she meets at a support group.

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine.

The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong

Title: The Gathering
Author: Kelley Armstrong
Pages: 359
Series: Darkness Rising
(Spin-off of the Darkest Powers trilogy)
Publisher: Atom
Edition: UK paperback
Rating:8/10

Goodreads Summary:

Sixteen-year-old Maya is just an ordinary teen in an ordinary town. Sure, she doesn't know much about her background - the only thing she really has to cling to is an odd paw-print birthmark on her hip - but she never really put much thought into who her parents were or how she ended up with her adopted parents in this tiny medical-research community on Vancouver Island.

Until now.

Strange things have been happening in this claustrophobic town - from the mountain lions that have been approaching Maya to her best friend's hidden talent for "feeling" out people and situations, to the sexy new bad boy who makes Maya feel . . . .different. Combine that with a few unexplained deaths and a mystery involving Maya's biological parents and it's easy to suspect that this town might have more than its share of skeletons in its closet.

My Review:

As much as I loved the Darkest Powers trilogy I way preferred this one, the plot was just as good it was just as exciting and mysterious but I liked the characters in this book so much better. Maya was a courageous heroine she didn't always need to be saved she could handle herself. Daniel was the perfect sweet but slightly over- protective best friend and Rafe was the dangerous, mysterious but irresistible new guy. The supernatural aspect kind of took a back-seat in the story. It's set in the same world as the Darkest Powers books but you hardly notice. I usually only read fantasy type books so you think that would bother me but I didn't mind at all I loved the book and it has inspired me to try some more contemporary books. The only problem I had with this book was a lot of questions were asked and most were left unanswered but then again there are two books left and plenty of time for those questions to be answered I for one will most definitely be reading The Calling(book #2) as soon as it comes out!

First Sentence:I stood under the tree and glared up at the three-legged bobcat.

What I loved the most about this book: Its has to be Maya's relationship with her parents(I know random) it's super funny but also really sweet.

Favourite Character: This one's really tough but I have to say Daniel(I love Rafe but I'm totally team Daniel).

Favourite Quote:"Yes you're getting your tattoo." I threw my arms around Dad's neck. "Thank you!" "Hey," Mom said. "I'm the one who had to persuade him it wasn't turning his little girl into a streetwalker." "I never said that," Dad said. "No?" I said. "Cool. Cause I've decided to skip the paw print. I'm thinking of a tramp stamp with flames that says 'Hot in Here.' No wait. Arrows. For directionally challenged guys"

Overall Rating: 8 stars
Cover Rating:B at first I thought the US copy was nicer but I think it suits the story it's creepy and somehow kind of mysterious.
